A Historic Moment for Woodland Christian
The Woodland Christian girls basketball team is poised to make history as they head to the CIF State Championship, aiming to become the first team from Yolo County to reach this prestigious level.
As excitement builds around this significant achievement, players and coaches reflect on their incredible journey.
A Season Full of Grit and Resilience
This season has been a testament to the team's grit and determination.
After a heartbreaking loss in the section finals to Bret Harte, the Cardinals bounced back to claim the NorCal championship.
“No team in Yolo County has ever been this far,” said sophomore Bailee Broward, reflecting the pride and determination that drives the team forward.
The Power of Teamwork
Head coach Shiloh Sorbello has underscored the importance of teamwork and chemistry in their success.
“We don't have a player that takes over games necessarily, but as a team, we really play hard. This year, everything came together—talent, chemistry, and toughness.”
Many players credit their successful bond to having played together since childhood. Broward added, “We have really strong team chemistry.
We’re a small school, so everyone sees each other every single day. They’re probably all my best friends, so it’s fun.”
This strong camaraderie not only makes their victories sweeter but also enhances their resilience on the court.
Experience at Golden 1 Center
Woodland Christian has already played at the prestigious Golden 1 Center twice this season, which many players believe will serve as an advantage.
“The last time we went to Golden 1, our eyes were kind of too big,” Coach Sorbello admitted. “Now, having that experience helps us understand what we’re getting into.”
Having faced larger schools during the playoffs adds another layer of challenge, but the Cardinals embrace their underdog status with confidence.
Inspiration from Underdog Status
With the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships featuring teams from larger schools, Woodland Christian is seen as an underdog.
Despite the odds, the Cardinals remain determined. “They’re a much bigger school. They’ve probably got five times as many students as we have, but we’re the little engine that could,” said Sorbello.
As they prepare for the challenge, their motto, “As long as we play hard and play our kind of basketball, we’ll give ourselves a shot and be proud of the outcome,” resonates strongly.
Looking Ahead to the Championship
The Cardinals are set to take the court on Friday against the Rosamond Roadrunners in what is a much-anticipated Division V girls' championship match.
As they aim for a state title, the entire Woodland community stands behind them, eager to witness this historic moment unfold.
Fans in Sacramento and nearby areas are encouraged to rally around the team, showcasing support for local sports and celebrating this milestone moment.
Whether win or lose, this season has already been a landmark year for Woodland Christian.
