Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento recently celebrated the eighth annual Rock the Block event in Oak Park, a two-day initiative that saw over 500 volunteers come together to uplift their community.
This remarkable gathering, held on May 9 and 10 at Saint Paul Church, is part of a concerted effort to preserve affordable housing by providing essential repairs to homes.
The Rock the Block event has not only repaired homes, but has also revitalized hope and connection within the Oak Park neighborhood, which has historically been underserved. With nearly $4.2 million invested since its inception in 2018, over 120 homes have received much-needed repairs along with 25 community projects completed.
This support is particularly crucial for seniors, veterans, and low-income families who might not be able to afford such repairs.

Tammy Brooks Vaughan, a long-time resident, recalled the dire state of her home before the repairs. “My house was almost uninhabitable,” she shared. Structural issues such as a leaking roof and a sunken bathroom floor had made her living conditions intolerable.
She expressed immense gratitude upon being informed her home would be repaired through Habitat's efforts. “It gave me back a home I can actually live in.” This heartfelt sentiment illustrates how collective community action can restore not just homes but also human dignity.
