A Tale of Two Car Shows
Every spring and fall, the roar of engines echoes through Sacramento’s Cal Expo — but depending on the month, the vibe is completely different.
In May, it’s all about gleaming chrome, hand-painted flames, and lowriders that took years to perfect.
By October, those same grounds buzz with quiet electric test drives, fresh tech from automakers, and curious families slipping behind the wheel of their first EV.
Two shows. Two cultures. One city that embraces both its horsepower heritage and its high-voltage future.
“I love that we can be both,” said one longtime attendee. “We celebrate where car culture started — and where it’s headed next.”
This article dives into the stories, strengths, and significance of Sacramento Autorama (May) and the Sacramento International Auto Show (October) — two car showcases that reflect where we’ve been and where we’re going.
Sacramento Has Two Major Auto Shows — But They’re Not the Same
Timing & Schedule
Sacramento Autorama takes place every May, with the 74th annual event confirmed for May 2–4, 2025.
The Sacramento International Auto Show is traditionally held in October, though the official 2025 dates have not yet been released.
Both are hosted at Cal Expo, but they deliver very different experiences.

A City Built on Wheels
Sacramento has long been a car town.
As the capital of the state that helped popularize freeway culture, and now leads the EV revolution, it’s no surprise the city plays host to two influential car shows.
The Sacramento Autorama honors craftsmanship, individuality, and legacy. The International Auto Show celebrates technology, sustainability, and accessibility.
Together, they showcase the full spectrum of car culture — from nostalgia to next-gen.
Custom Culture: Inside the Sacramento Autorama
The Autorama is a show that runs deep. Started over 70 years ago, it’s one of the longest-running indoor custom car showcases in America.
Each year, more than 500 elite vehicles line the show halls, competing for over 400 awards.
The top honor, Best of the West Grand Champion, comes with a $12,500 prize.
Other coveted trophies include Custom d’Elegance, World’s Most Beautiful Lowrider, and Joe Bailon Candy Apple Red Award.
Many of the vehicles tell deeply personal stories — tributes to parents, siblings, or friends, built over years or even generations.
“This Impala? It’s more than a car. It’s my dad’s story. He started it. I finished it.”
Add in live pinstriping demos, local vendors, and the Autorama Drive-In, and the event becomes more than a show — it’s a living museum of personal and cultural history.

EV Access and Education: The International Auto Show
In contrast, the Sacramento International Auto Show is built around the future of driving. While it does feature traditional makes and models, the event’s standout attraction is the Ride & Drive program.
Here, attendees test drive EVs and hybrids on-site — without any sales pressure.
It’s one of the only places where you can drive a Ford Mach-E, Toyota bZ4X, and Tesla Model Y back-to-back. “We don’t want to just show you these cars—we want you to feel what they’re like to drive,” said a volunteer with SacEV.
Booths hosted by SMUD and SacEV provide information on:
Charging at home
Public charging networks
Available rebates and tax incentives
Choosing the right EV for your lifestyle
The environment is educational, inclusive, and beginner-friendly. It’s also family-friendly, with interactive stations and open vehicles that kids can explore.

Focuses on artistry, legacy, and identity

But the truth is: you don’t have to choose. Attend both. Learn from both. Celebrate both.
